Jay is active in his community and church. He served on the Armuchee-Glenwood Education Foundation for three years, including one year as president. The Foundation is a non-profit organization which raises money to help support the four schools in the Armuchee community. Jay is a member of Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon and as a member of the Properties Committee.
In his spare time, he can be found on the golf course, or depending on the season, watching the Atlanta Braves Class A affiliate Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium or the ECHL Atlanta Gladiators hockey team at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth.
Jay played on the first hockey team fielded by his high school and has participated in adult hockey leagues during the 1990's. Some years back, he began collecting authentic hockey jerseys for all the professional hockey teams that have called Georgia home. Jay created the Georgia Hockey Museum, a website dedicated to preserving the history of profesional hockey in Georgia.
